Little Girl Plays with Dead Squirrel

Question : Discuss about the Little Girl Plays with Dead Squirrel ? Answer : Introducation Several challenges stand out in transcribing the video as a novice, finding it difficult to depend on symbols to signify actions. The Jeffersonian system proved a challenge in trying to capture the essence of what is spoken and transmuting it to a reader to understand it clearly. The audio unfolds in a coherent and tightly knit format of storytelling, as omitting one character would dilute the essence of what is transpiring. The positioning theory of storytelling tightly connects all the characters in their roles and builds them up in the narrative. (DeFina, 2015). The little girl is acting out of the character expected of a girl her age, as relates to dead animals. It would be expected of that age group to fear touching dead animals, but the girl is doing the opposite. This is what Rapley would characterize as doing uncertainty (Rapley, 2012, p.426). As the narrative continues, it is easy to get lost in the plot in the middle, without the use of visual image. Intonation and connotation alone is not conclusive as in the case of the girl repeating sweet baby, sweet baby. Meaning can be lost and the reader of the transcript can be left hanging and lost as to the paradox of such words in the midst of a narrative touching on death. The unidentified male voice is engaged in perspective display sequence in asking the small girl if the squirrel is actually dead. ( Rapley, 2012, p.429). The unidentified male voice wants to get affirmation from the girl to ascertain her understanding of death. Another discursive strategy exposed is use of humor in the narrative. Humor in the narrative is used communicate paradox. The four technique of humor are language (infantilism or language of the small girl), logic (absurdity in fascination with death by the girl), identity (action before and by the girl after knowing death is a permanent state) and action (girl making the squirrel scratch its head with her hands.) Rejected humor is also shown by the adult female in wondering whether the small girl will be a vegetarian after the incidence. Although intended to be light-hearted in the context, it was purposely ignored by the hidden male. In the context of the interactions with the small child, it would have been inappropriate to pursue it further. References Berger A. A. (2016).
